During this workshop, we talked with Scott Weisman, GISP, CPM, TLCGIS Program Coordinator. Scott has his roots in parcel mapping and has been working for the Tallahassee-Leon County GIS Interlocal program since 1998 and managing that program since 2013. He is also an adjunct instructor at Florida State University’s GIS Master’s Program, teaching “GIS in Local Government”. Among the topics discussed are:
- The interlocal program, its purpose and history
- Management styles and why they matter (pragmatic, data driven, and believing people will do good without the need to micro-manage)
- What makes TLCGIS successful (longevity, flywheel effect, niche’ skillsets) - What are TLCGIS’ challenges (niche’ skillsets and pigeon holing, overlap in skills, deepening the bench in local gov, keeping up with tech, development, etc.)
- Challenges/A few big issues and strategies for overcoming them - Future vision and paths for TLCGIS
